Savory Crisscross Pastry

This recipe is often requested by friends and family. It is one I found in a magazine YEARS ago. I make it a lot for the holidays and for parties. I've also made it and served it with a salad for a light dinner. It is easy to make but looks like it was difficult.

Thawing time: About 30 minutes
Preparation time: About 20 minutes
Baking time: About 35 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 package frozen puff pastry sheets (1 sheet)

  • 2 eggs

  • 1 tablespoon water

  • 1/2 pound bulk pork sausage

  • 1 cup herb-seasoned stuffing

  • 1 small onion, chopped

  • 1 cup chopped mushrooms

Baking Instructions:

1. Thaw pastry sheet at room temperature for 30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 375. Mix 1 egg and 1 tablespoon water for egg wash. Mix sausage, stuffing, remaining egg, onion, and mushrooms.

3. Unfold pastry sheet on lightly floured surface. Cut slits 1 inch apart from outer edge up to fold mark on each side of pastry. Spoon sausage mixture down center of pastry. Starting at one end, fold pastry strips over sausage, alternating sides, to cover. Place on baking sheet. Brush with egg wash. Bake 35 minutes, or until golden.
