Our future is... growing

Some time has passed since my last post. We moved to North Carolina in August 2014 and bought some land in the country last summer. We love the life we are building out here and are making our dreams come true. One thing we wanted to do was start becoming self sufficient. To do that requires that we learn to grow food. Well, if you've ever been around me much, you will notice I have rarely had LIVE plants in my house. The only exception was when my mom lived with us and she watered them regularly... for awhile. However, Jon told me about straw bale gardening and we decided to give that a shot!

We needed a good spot that received regular sun. We found that in our "tractor" pasture (called that because that's where the tractor lives). You have to condition the bales first for 12 days and then plant your seeds and/or seedlings. We started some seedlings in the house but realize we started them a little too late so they are a little behind in the garden.

We are still learning so we realized too late that we planted some plants that do better in the cooler season (such as peas and kale). We also planted tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, watermelon, cantaloupe, squash, zucchini, strawberries, green beans, onions, pumpkin, peppers, and some herbs. We are learning as we go and have already started altering and expanding our garden plans for next Spring!

Here's some photos of when we were first starting out. I'll post updated photos soon, as it has grown substantially and we are enjoying some of our new veggies! :)
